September 29, 2007
The Event:
The Friends of the National World War II Memorial and WETA in cooperation with PBS, Ken Burns, the U.S. Army Freedom Team Salute, and the National Park Service presented A Tribute to the Veterans of World War II on the National Mall on Saturday, September 29, 2007 at 5:30 p.m. The event was open to the public.
The Purpose of the Event:
To recognize and honor the central character in the Ken Burns’ documentary series on World War II -- the American GI -- the Soldiers, Sailors and Airmen who served in that War and those of their generation who served nobly in the War effort at home.
The Program:
A public acknowledgement of the debt owed to a rapidly declining number of living World War II veterans – their sacrifice and their legacy-- followed by an hour-long screening of excerpts from the Ken Burns’ documentary entitled “The War”. A short program of WWII era music preceded and followed the tribute and the film.
