Dale Picking was born on February 9, 1924, in Yankton, South Dakota. On the same day he graduated from high school, he enlisted in the United States Army, beginning his service at the height of World War II. He was stationed in Papua New Guinea, serving in the headquarters under General Douglas MacArthur, where he played a vital role during the Pacific campaign.
While his military duties were significant, Dale also instilled pride in the Army through his participation in sports. A talented basketball player, he competed on the Army team in Manila, going up against the Navy, which included NBA Hall of Famer Bob Davies. These moments of camaraderie and competition offered brief but meaningful relief during wartime.
After returning home, Dale established a career in the oil and gas industry, working with Shell in Wyoming, Colorado, and Montana. He married Mary Lou, and together they raised two children, Beth and Bruce. Although Mary Lou and Bruce have passed away, Dale’s life remains filled with love, including the joy he shares with his daughter and granddaughters.
Now living in Colorado with his loyal dog Mojo, Dale stays active by enjoying golf, walking, good food, and spending time with family. Reflecting on his life with humility and grace, Dale’s story stands as a powerful testament to courage and sacrifice.
