Fred was born on January 22nd, 1925, to Rudolph and Rachel Schippmann. As the fifth of eleven children, he grew up surrounded by the warmth and camaraderie of a large family. His journey took a dramatic turn during his senior year of high school when the draft came directly into his classroom. Alongside four classmates, Fred was called to serve his country during World War II, leaving his education unfinished but answering the call of duty with courage and determination.
From January 1943 until the end of the war, Fred served in the U.S. Army and participated in five major battles during WWII. One of his most remarkable memorieswas reuniting with his brother Albert in Belgium after three years apart. Albert was with the 30th Division Signal Corps, while Fred was attached to the 45th Field Hospital Corps. Their brief reunion served as a poignant reminder of the strength of family bonds, even amid the chaos of war. After the war, Fred returned home and built a life around family, community, and hard work. He married Audrey Crawford on June 7th, 1949, and together, they shared over 72 years of marriage until her passing in March 2022. Their love and partnership inspired everyone who knew them.
Fred worked as a postal carrier, demonstrating his dedication and commitment to serving others. Even in retirement, he contributed by working at the police department. Known for his generosity and kindness, Fred helped his neighbors by mowing lawns, taking out the trash for widowed women on collection day, and supporting his community in countless small but meaningful ways.
Fred enjoys playing softball and coaching Little League baseball. He reflects fondly upon the time he spent with his wife working on pursuing creative projects. Fred’s legacy is carried on by his two children, Frederic and Linda, three grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and countless proud nieces and nephews who honor his life and the example he continues to set.
