Herbert Thomas was born on October 15, 1924, and attended school until the 8th grade, at which point he began working to help provide for his family. He was inducted into the United States Army at the age of 19. As a PFC in the QMC, his military occupational specialty was truck driver. During his service, he received the ATO Medal, EAMETO Medal, APTO Medal, Good Conduct Medal, and the World War II Victory Medal. He was honorably discharged in January 1946. Herbert is the father and stepfather of 11 children. He worked hauling pulpwood, at a fertilizer plant, as a farmer and gardener, and as a custodian with the USPS to support his family. Herbert still attends church regularly and enjoys fishing, the New Orleans Saints, and watching old westerns on TV.
