Joe Hilario was born on March 12, 1924, in San Antonio, Texas, and moved with his family to California when he was five years old. In December 1942, at the age of 18, Joe enlisted in the United States Navy, driven by a strong sense of duty. He served as a Coxswain in the Pacific Theater during World War II, operating a Landing Craft Vehicle Personnel (Higgins boat) in the Battle of Green Island. Under enemy fire, he transported troops from ship to shore, risking his life to ensure the success of the landing and the safety of his fellow servicemen.
Joe was honorably discharged in December 1945, having served for three years and six months. In the decades following the war, he remained dedicated to his fellow veterans through active membership in VFW Post 6315 in Pico Rivera, California. Renowned for his love of reading and woodworking, Joe has also spent his postwar years embracing curiosity and craftsmanship.
Now celebrating his 100th birthday, Joe Hilario’s life embodies the enduring values of service, bravery, and lifelong engagement.
