John Little was born in Gardendale, Alabama, on October 27, 1924, to John and Ellen Little. He attended Mortimer Jordan High School in Morris, Alabama, and was drafted for the war before graduating. John served in the Army's 34th Infantry Division, also known as the "Red Bull. " He participated in the Italian Campaign, including Monte Cassino, Anzio, and Po Valley, and was honored with the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star.
