Born on November 22nd, 1924, Vaughn Stephens served in the US Navy from January 1943 to December 1946. He was sworn in at Union Station in Nashville, TN, at the age of 18. Serving as Signalman 1st Class, he was recommended for Warrant Officer just before his discharge in Baltimore, MD. His service included being stationed on the USS Feland APA 11, LCI 97, USS Wichita CA 45, and USS Little Rock CL 92. He was injured by shrapnel in Guam from a bullet that struck the dock between him and another soldier. His favorite tour was on the USS Little Rock when he traveled to Europe on a goodwill mission. Although he wasn't originally assigned to that ship, he decided to trade positions with another signalman. He led the team in preparing the ship for full dress.
