William Gottung

William Gottung

William Gottung served as a Private First Class in the U.S. Army’s 104th Infantry, the Timberwolf Division, from December 28, 1942, to January 5, 1946. He fought in Germany, Holland, and Belgium and received the Purple Heart on December 3, 1944, as well as the Bronze Star for his service.

After the war, he built a long and successful career as a chemical engineer and manager at General Electric, where he worked for 32 years. William was married to Phyllis Lonergan Gottung for 58 years, and together they raised seven children.

Originally from Fort Plain, New York, William later settled in Charlton, New York. He took pride in being a grandfather to fifteen and a great-grandfather to twelve, and he is remembered for his commitment to both his country and his family. William peacefully passed away on November 13, 2024, at the age of 100.
